OSHA-Compliant Solutions
CEJN Solutions Save Lives and Money

CEJN invests in safety. Several of the products from CEJN significantly reduce the recoil effect and the sudden expansion of air, which in turn reduces the risk of hearing damage and lashing. At the same time, CEJN's high-quality pneumatic products offer excellent flow properties and are easy-to-use.

Vented Safety Coupling with Recoil Dampening
Specifically designed to disconnect in two stages in order to vent, minimize the risk of sudden component separation, reduce noise, and prevent recoil accidents

Hose Kit with Vented Safety-Coupling
Practical all-in-one solution prevents leakage and potential hearing damage

Blowgun with Star Tip
Prevents damage by diverting the pressure when dead-ended

Hose and Cable Reels
Minimizes risk of tripping by keeping hose and cables off the floor

Blowgun with Safety Regulator
Prevents damage by reducing air pressure to a safe level when air stream is blocked/dead-ended

The Softwareless Safety Controller

Introducing the Flexi Controller from SICK , a modular safety-rated controller that provides configurable logic without using any software. Users can realize the benefits of integrated safety logic without using a computer to program the device, saving time and simplifying setup. The Flexi Controller (UE410 Flexi Series) provides a unique solution for safety-relevant applications. Historically, safety logic has been implemented using either hardwire techniques with safety relays, or via more expensive safety programmable logical controllers (safety PLCs). Flexi Controllers take advantage of the benefits of both technologies.

  • Implements safety-rated logic using only rotary switches (no software required)
  • Supports monitoring and associated control using multiple safety sensors
  • Optimal integration of SICK safety devices
  • Considerable reduction in the interconnect wiring compared to safety relay solutions
  • 50% reduction in the control cabinet space required
  • Relay expansion capability
  • Integration of diagnostics using Profibus, DeviceNet, CANopen

A Safe Robot is a Productive Robot

For two decades, the focus on robotic safety has been guided by the Robotic Industries Association's ANSI/RIA R15.06 safety standard. The purpose of this standard is to provide guidelines for industrial robot manufacture, remanufacture and rebuild; robot system installation; and methods of safeguarding to enhance the safety of personnel associated with the use of industrial robots and robot systems. The ANSI/RIA R15.06-1999 standard offers more options to achieving the required level of reliability and more detail on how to get there including the use of risk assessment.

Customer Profile: Busse/SJI Corporation
Application: guarding pallet entry/exit for operator protection

Busse/SJI Corporation is a leader in material handling. Located in Randolph , Wisconsin , Busse/SJI, Corporation employs approximately 100 employees at the 110,000 sq. ft. facility. The company was founded by Curtis and Gilbert Busse in 1946. In 1999, Arrowhead Systems purchased Busse and SJI to form Busse/SJI Corporation. The company manufactures palletizers and depalletizers for customers in all industries, including the canning and bottling industry (think of the industry giants like Tropicana, Gatorade, and SC Johnson Wax.)

The Situation

The challenge with every project is how to best protect operators when interacting with equipment. Busse/SJI needed to create a system that prevented people from entering palletizer and depalletizer machines, thus protecting them from injury. In the past, Busse/SJI tried other safety components to protect the hoist entry area, such as safety mats. Although each safety device has its benefits, the safety mats could be removed with ease, and operators found ways to evade the protection. Also, if a pallet fell, safety mats were easily damaged, causing downtime until new mats were ordered and installed.

The Solution

Matt Giebel and Randy Jung

Randy Jung, sales engineer for Doig, convinced Busse/SJI to take a look at a Doig solution. He proposed a complete safety system, including light curtains with muting modules, safety relays, sensors, and mounting brackets. The proposed safety system was a “new way” to guard pallet entry/exit areas and offered more effective containment around the pallet hoist. There were less reach-in capabilities and virtually no ways to defeat or to “fake out” the new muting feature. “Light curtains have the reliability that mats don't have,” states John Knechtel, electrical engineering manager for Busse/SJI. He continues to claim, “Muting functions add a lot to the ability to keep people out.” Jung, along with SICK safety representative John Frolic, brought in solution demos that convinced Busse/SJI of the system's flexibility. Knechtel indicates, “SICK's controller is a lot more flexible than the competitors' muting. No special timing or sequences are required.”

Ultimately, Busse/SJI went with Doig because the solution beat out competitors in cost and provided more features to accomplish the necessary muting. According to Matt Giebel, controls engineer for Busse/SJI, “the solution reduced costs and gave us a single solution for both applications: palletizing and depalletizing.” Doig also offered Busse/SJI more flexibility by supplying mounting options and additional engineering support. “The engineering that went into this project was reduced due to Randy [Jung]'s efforts,” Knechtel testifies. He adds, “Randy does a great job solving our needs.”
