Tolomatic Introduces the MX Band Cylinder-
Designed to outlast every rodless cylinder on the market

The MX pneumatic rodless cylinder is exactly what you expect from the industry's number one rodless supplier. Designed with Tolomatic 's exclusive ENDURANCE TECHNOLOGY SM features, the MX delivers superior performance to meet the most demanding applications. Nobody knows rodless like Tolomatic, and the MX proves it.

• DURABLE BEARINGS. Three bearing choices to match your application needs. Profiled rail design uses THK® Caged Ball® technology to reduce friction and extend actuator life. Solid bearing design reduces stress concentration by 59% for optimum performance. Internal bearing design is permanently lubricated for long, trouble-free service.

• DURABLE BANDS. Stainless steel bands are stronger and will not elongate like elastomer (non-metallic) bands, providing reliable sealing over the life of the actuator.

INTERNAL BEARING- N
• Low cost solution for applications with limited load and bending moment requirements
• Lowest breakaway pressure
• Best in many vertical applications
• Permanently lubed internal bearing

SOLID BEARING- S
• Increased Mx moment capacity
• Large bearing surface contact area minimizes pressure on bearing surfaces for long service life
• Large carrier mounting pattern for more load stability and compatibility with existing BC2 applications
• Engineered bearing material does not require additional lubrication
• Solid bearings are field replaceable

PROFILED RAIL- P
• THK® Caged Ball® bearings with reduced friction for reliable service life
• High load and bending moment capacities
• Low profile to fit your application
• High precision bearings feature smooth, low breakaway motion

While Tolomatic is not discontinuing the BC series, please note that the MX solid bearing series is dimensionally interchangeable with the BC2 series. This allows customers to upgrade to the MX technology without significantly changing their design envelope. All three designs are currently available in bore sizes 16, 25 and 32mm. More sizes to be released in 2007!

Top Ten Air System Mistakes
Article courtesy of Freelin-Wade

CompressorWise.com interviewed hundreds of individuals who are involved with compressed air systems. The interviews led to insight into the problem areas that are common to most air systems. Hopefully, this report will give you some ideas for making improvements in your plant.

  1. Believing compressed air is cheap
  2. Air leaks
  3. Compressor controls
  4. Pressure loss in piping system
  5. Contamination from piping system
  6. Poor condensation management
  7. Supplying higher pressure air than is needed
  8. A lack of air system training
  9. Lack of trouble shooting info rmation
  10. Cookie cutter approach to oil and filter changes

1. Believing compressed air is cheap

Air compressors powered by electrical motors will use a surprisingly large amount of energy each and every year of operation. The annual power cost to operate a compressor can equal the initial cost of the unit. The initial purchase price of a 100 horsepower air compressor will range between $30,000 and $50,000 depending on the type and options. The same 100 horsepower compressor operating 6,000 hours a year (a power rate of $0.07 per kW and a motor efficiency of .90) will have an annual power cost of $34,800. You can determine the annual electric power cost of your compressors with this formula. The first step is to multiply the horsepower of the compressor times .746 times the hours of operation times your power rate (HP x .746 x hours x power rate). Then, divide that number by the motor efficiency. Everyone in the plant should be made aware of the total power cost for operating the compressors. This is especially important for anyone that works with air-operated equipment.

2. Air leaks

The most common opportunity to recover energy cost is to control the compressed air leaks. Effective leak control in an air system can pay huge dividends…

Customer Profile: Custom Wire Technologies, Inc.
Application: Building a custom machine for custom spring assembly

Custom Wire Technologies, Inc (CWT) is a contract manufacturer for medical device components primarily made from wire. Located in Port Washington , Wisconsin , CWT brings forty years of single-minded focus to the table, making them the leading partner in fine wire medical device contract manufacturing. CWT's unique positioning includes unmatched flexibility, accuracy, and quality with unbelievable single or two-day prototyping and production turnaround speed. Their customers' ideas easily become commercial reality with CWT's integrated focus on the medical field's unique requirements.

The Situation

CWT was presented with a big business opportunity from one of their top medical customers. To secure the business, they needed to find a cost-effective way to create the custom product. For the prototype, CWT created the twisted wire rod manually using two men and a bench top! Although it proves their dedication and commitment, manual operation wasn't an option with order quantities in the hundreds of thousands; CWT needed to automate its manual system to win the business. The challenge was to build an all-encompassing machine for custom spring assembly.

The Solution

DOIG helped CWT design a custom machine from scratch. Bob Boldig, president of CWT, was familiar with DOIG's capabilities and what we could offer. He told Randy Jung, DOIG sales engineer, about the project, and Randy immediately brought in Mike Edminster, DOIG engineering manager; together with Carl Wegner, CWT's quality manager, they brainstormed and talked about the possibilities. What components did DOIG have to build the custom machines? What was needed? What was the goal and target? According to Bob, “Randy and Mike hand-picked the components. They provided the perfect solution. I'd still be looking on the Internet if it weren't for them. Mike calculated torque, properly sized the components including the motor and actuator, and taught us all about the CTC controller. He would mention inherent costs; he'd question incorporating products that were pricey and offered frivolous options. Ultimately, Mike provided optimal component selection.”

Bob Boldig and Randy Jung

Randy Jung also proved to be an asset. As Bob states, “Randy has always provided me with what I needed. He responds immediately and never wastes any time finding a solution.” When asked if CWT will be contacting DOIG for future projects, Bob confidently states, “I just called Randy last Friday with a new challenge!”

Benefits of the DOIG solution:

  • Met production demands
Per Bob, “We never would have been able to secure the business without DOIG's solution. It wasn't possible to manually make the quantity needed.” A nice, efficient solution!
  • Minimized costs
Bob confirms, “The custom-built machine truly runs without an operator around.” Good for lowering labor costs! The machine is so self-sufficient, the CTC web-enabled controller can actually notify Bob when the machine is down with a quick phone call… any time, any day.
  • Offered superior service and product knowledge
Again, Bob testifies the truth, “I never even entertained any competitors. It wasn't about the cost; I didn't accept competitive bids. I just don't know if I would have received that much support from anywhere else. I needed expertise in product knowledge, components, how they married up… and I went to DOIG. Anyone who needs automation operation can benefit from DOIG's services-anyone who's looking for the complete package and the custom automation. This isn't the only project we've teamed up with DOIG. We've done many, and they've all been successful.”

Overall evaluation from Bob Boldig: “This machine makes nothing but money!”
