Hi,

If you offer it they will come. That is the belief of all of us at Milwaukee Tennis & Education Foundation, and our partners, as we structured this summer’s lesson and league tennis program for families in the Milwaukee community. Our free youth tennis and reading program, formerly available through select schools and youth-serving agencies, is now open to any child, ages 7-15 years old. MTEF’s adult/senior tennis lessons have expanded to eight citywide sites with increased days and times, and we have started a USTA Milwaukee Metro League that will make league play affordable and accessible to every resident of Milwaukee.

Tennis has always been considered a family sport and one of those unique sports that can be played for a lifetime. Recent studies are proving that there are many health benefits to playing tennis. Tennis stimulates the mind and body, and fosters competitive skill development. In fact, a number of studies indicate that tennis cuts the risk of heart disease and helps foster sociability, mental focus, teamwork, and discipline. It is a great stress reducer and burns more calories than many other popular sports. Studies show that people who participate in tennis 3 hours per week (at a moderately vigorous intensity) cut their risk of death in half from any cause.

When you consider all of the health benefits, then add the extensive free programming available for entire families, the question is why wouldn’t people want to participate? The only reason I can think of is that they don’t know about MTEF and the programs that we have to offer. Take a few minutes to learn about some of our activities and events, then pass this newsletter on to someone who might want the chance to make tennis the sport of their lifetime.

Sincerely,

Jay Massart

USTA Metro Adult Tennis League

Together with the Milwaukee Public Schools – Division of Recreation and Community Services, and the USTA Wisconsin District, MTEF is offering a Metro Milwaukee Adult Tennis League. This three-tiered collaboration will provide USTA League play for adults and seniors from the advanced beginner (2.5) level through the tournament player (4.0) level at eight area locations beginning June 4, 2007. “Our goal is to utilize city parks and schools to offer tennis opportunities to people who may otherwise not be able to participate,” stated MTEF President, Dave Pelisek, when asked what the foundation’s goals were with this new venture.

The Metro League, which is open to Milwaukee residents and non-residents, is designed for those individuals who want to further develop their tennis skills in a highly structured program and the chance to advance to state and sectional competition. This League, which is the first of its kind for Milwaukee, will include a special USTA membership offer, sponsored by the USTA Wisconsin District. Nancy Massart, USTA Wisconsin District Coordinator, will administer the league.

Our summer session runs June 18th through August 10th and is followed by the Mayor’s Cup Metro Adult Tennis Tournament which will be held August 18-19 at Wick Field and Sherman Park. This Month at MTEF
Help Wanted, Tennis Instructors Needed!

Youth Instruction
Ever thought about teaching kids? MTEF is looking for motivated, responsible individuals to provide on-court tennis instruction and match play for youth according to the TEAM Curriculum. This is a great opportunity for high school and college students interested in teaching summer junior tennis lessons. It’s also a great job for school teachers who have the summer off and seniors who would like part-time work and the chance to mentor today’s youth.

Adult Instruction
With the expansion of our adult/senior lesson program we are looking for individuals to teach adult and senior tennis lessons. Individuals should be proficient at playing tennis at the 3.5 level or higher, have considerable knowledge and interest in teaching and enjoy working with adults eager to learn. Our adult programs begin in May and continue through September at eight citywide sites.

TEAM

Tennis is a sport for kids to learn early in life. What parents wouldn’t want their children to get these benefits through their growing years? Unfortunately, not all parents are able to provide their children the opportunity to learn and enjoy tennis, that is, until now.

MTEF’s NJTL TEAM Outreach program is a neighborhood-based, free program that combines education and life skill development with the sport of tennis. TEAM serves approximately 3,000 at-risk children annually in grades 2-8, at 20 citywide locations. A First Serve Chapter, TEAM benefits from the award-winning First Serve Life Skill Curriculum, free staff training, on-going support and additional fundraising opportunities.

Community Tennis

As popular as tennis is, there are literally millions of people who have yet to be introduced to the game and many others who will play more often, if given the opportunity. As Milwaukee's official Community Tennis Association (CTA), and National Junior Tennis League (NJTL) Chapter, MTEF assists in the delivery, support, and integration of tennis programs in this community.

Highlights of the community tennis division are the adult/senior tennis programs, various recreational coach workshops, suburban Junior Team Tennis League, National Tennis Day and the NJTL Rally, featuring tennis legend Stan Smith.
